Soak holes are very common in Auckland, especially in areas where there is volcanic land, such as Onehunga, Epsom and Mt Wellington to name a few. They are usually installed on properties that don’t have a connection to the public stormwater drainage and while there are a number of different types, they generally work by creating a pathway for collected water to slowly disperse into the ground.

Over time soak holes can get blocked with silt, vegetation, and other debris reducing their ability to effectively disperse the stormwater on your property. When this happens, the stormwater seeks alternative routes and there is an increased risk of flooding.

Well-maintained, soak holes can last for decades before they need replacing. This involves regular clearing of the soak hole and maintenance of the filter.
